You only need a few storecupboard basics to make these crumbly, cheesey pastry witches broomsticks. Happy Halloween!
- baking trays
- large bowl
- small bowl
- 90g plain flour
- 40g butter
- 40g Cheddar cheese
- 1 free-range egg
Turn the oven on to 190C. Rub a little butter over 2 baking trays or line with greasproof paper. Weigh the flour into a bowl. Using a table knife and a chopping board, cut the cold butter into small pieces.
Add the cold butter to the flour. Using your fingertips rub the butter into the flour. Try not to use your whole hands as the warm hands will melt the butter. Keep lifting your fingers high above the bowl to add air to the flour.
It will take a little while rubbing the butter into the flour, keep going until you have a bowl of breadcrumbs.
Crack an egg into a small bowl, fish out any shell if you need to and whisk together with a fork. Tip the egg into the bowl and mix together.
Bring the mixture together into a ball. Break the mixture in half and then break each half in 5 to make 10 peices.
Roll each piece into a sausage shape.
Flatten an end of each sausage and using a table knife, cut this flat part into thin strips to look like the base of the broom.
Put the sticks on the baking tray. Sprinkle a little extra cheese over the sticks of the end of the brooms. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden and cooked.
